Wikipedia defines programming as ‘a process that leads from an original formulation of a computing problem to executable computer programs. Programming involves activities such as analysis, developing understanding, generating algorithms, verification of requirements of algorithms including their correctness and resources consumption, and implementation (commonly referred to as coding) of algorithms in a target programming language.
When you want to start learning how to program, you may be confused and you may end up asking yourself, ‘what types of programming languages do I need to learn? Which programming language is most widely used? What are the trendiest programming languages?’.
There are different types of programming languages available. You choose the most suitable one based on the purpose and type of application you want to develop.
If you are passionate about mobile application development such as developing apps for smartphones, you have to learn programming languages such as Swift, Java, Kotlin.
Whereas if you want to develop desktop applications you will need to learn programming languages such as Java, C++, C# and so on.
Here, I will highlight the trendiest programming languages generally used for mobile application, desktop application and web application development:
Java: Java is another high level programming language. It is also an object oriented programming (OOP) language. It is used for server-side applications, to create mobile applications.
Java is one of the oldest programming languages available. It is also used in developing Android applications for Android smartphones. According to Fossbytes, use of Java grew by 63 percent in 2016.
Python: Python is a general purpose programming language. It emphasizes code readability and increasing developer productivity.
Python is widely used for desktop apps, web apps and data mining. It is accompanied with a lot of frameworks which make development easy.
Python is even recommended as the first programming language to learn for beginners.
PHP: PHP (also known as Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely used open source general purpose programming language. It is mainly used for server-side scripting and web application development.
PHP is known to power more than 200 million websites including WordPress (a popular content management system).
C++: C++ was designed to enhance the C language. It is an intermediate level language with object oriented programming features.
C++ is the programming language used to develop softwares like Firefox, Winamp and Adobe. It is mostly used to develop system softwares, application softwares, high-performance server and client applications and video games.
C#: C# (pronounced ‘C-sharp’) combines principles from C and C++. It is a multi-paradigm language developed by Microsoft as part of its .NET initiative.
C# is a general purpose language used to develop software for Microsoft and Windows platforms.
C: C is about the oldest programming language. It is a general purpose, imperative programming language developed in the early ’70s. It is also the most widely used language on this list.
C is mostly used for implementing operating systems and embedded applications.
Is there any other programming language you think should be on this list? Kindly share it in the comment box below.
