Nigeria’s tennis star Olufunke Oshonaike has been selected to lead Team Nigeria to the opening ceremony of Rio 2016 Olympics at the Maracana Stadium on Friday, August 5.
Oshonaike who is competing in her sixth Olympics has also been appointed as assistant captain of Team Nigeria, according to report. She is assistant to Mikel Obi who has also been named the captain of the football team.
In a statement, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) said that Funke Oshonaike would treasure the chance to be the flagbearer as marching with her fellow athletes in an opening ceremony is considered by many as the pinnacle of their Olympic journeys.
Another table tennis star Segun Toriola is also making his seventh appearance at the Olympics.
Following the Olympics tradition, an athlete would take the Olympic Oath at the opening ceremomy ‘in the name of all the competitors’.
