I almost left Chelsea in summer – Diego Costa

Chelsea football club forward Diego Costa has said he wanted to leave the London club in summer, according to a report.

The Brazil-born striker joined the Chelsea in 2014 for £32m , and was close to a return to former club Atletico Madrid after a difficult 2015-16 campaign.

The prolific Spain international has since scored 14 Premier League goals in the 2016-17 campaign, seeing Chelsea to a six-point lead courtesy of 13 successive victories.

‘Did I want to go? Yes, yes, I was about to leave. But not because of Chelsea,’ the 28-year-old revealed.

‘There was one thing I wanted to change for family reasons but it wasn’t to be, and I continue to be happy here.’

Costa scored 20 goals in his first season in the EPL, as Chelsea won the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho.

But he had a rough 2015-2016, netting only 12 goals, and was heavily linked with a move.

Costa also revealed that he has also made a conscious effort to curb his aggressive nature on the pitch.

‘I knew I had to improve that aspect because here in the Premier League there is no mercy,’ he said.

‘A lot of the time it seemed [referees] were against me. If they’re not going to change, I had to change.’

Chelsea hope to maintain their lead in the EPL when they return to action against London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday.
