Lagos to upgrade stadiums across city

THE NEWSGHOST, NIGERIA – The government of Lagos is making a move to upgrade sports facilities across the megacity. According to a recent report, this was disclosed by Babatunde Bank-Anthony, the Director-General of Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), in an interview with journalist in Lagos today, Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

Bank-Anthony pointed that the government had given approval for all community stadiums in the city to be upgraded to international standard. He lamented that with a population of about 18 million, Lagos should have better sports structures which will be of international standard.

In his discussion with journalists, he said:

‘What we are doing now is to upgrade all our community stadiums to international standard, Campos mini stadium has already be given a facelift, the Isheri community stadium will also be upgraded.

‘The Maracanna Stadium in Ajegunle will also be upgraded to meet international standard, these are community stadiums but we believe that a state with a population of 18 million deserves better.

‘The stadiums uplift will go round and we will not leave any behind which tells the reason we are presently having a brand new stadium in Onikan and the resurfacing at the Teslim Balogun.

‘All what we are doing is to have a state that can boast of good infrastructure for grassroots development of sports which we are already reaping the rewards.’

According to Bank-Anthony, the government intends to focus more on grassroots development of sports. He said that athletes from the state were already making waves across the country and internationally.

The LSSC Director-General added that:

‘We are concentrating on grassroots development of sports which we think is the basis of sports development. Our athletes are sourced even from the schools.

‘The state has been stressing the need for proper source for the national team and the source is the grassroots where the potential athletes are based and this is where we discover them.

‘Our stadiums will provide the best facilities for the development of the athletes, international standards for them to grow and become the best.

‘We are already reaping the rewards of these investments because some of the swimmers in the state are already making waves.

‘Someone like Naomi Oke, a swimmer who represented Nigeria and came with nine gold medals.’

Lagos trains unemployed graduates in automobile maintenance skills

THE NEWSGHOST, NIGERIA – Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, has embarked on the training of unemployed graduates as a fulfillment of his job creation policy.

According to report, while flagging off the on-boarding ceremony of the first 50 recipient of the training in Alausa, Ikeja, Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, the Lagos State Commissioner of Wealth and Job Creation, said that the high rate of unemployment in the state led the state government to bring up this initiative to empower graduates with vocational skills which is less expensive than academic educational programmes and expected to give them more freedom to generate income.

The commissioner hinted that the ministry will be collaborating with Automedics Training Institute in Ikeja to train the 50 selected unemployed graduates for six months in: Auto Diagnosis, Auto Electrical, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), as well as Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Maintenance and Repair.

After the completion of the six months training, the trainees would be qualified for internship with haulage, transport and heavy generator maintenance and repair companies that are associates of Automedics or may take up full employment in the automobile sector.

The commissioner also explained that the Bus Reform Initiative of the Lagos State Government would also provide job opportunities for graduates from this programme, since 5,000 fully air-conditioned buses would be involved in the initiative and would require maintenance over time.

She told the trainees that attendance and punctuality will be duly monitored and the guarantors of trainees who fail to complete the training would refund the amount spent by the government to train such participants.
